The M11 now links Istanbul Airport with Halkalı as of 20 June 2026, adding a western rail option; private routes remain 41.92 km to Taksim and 49.62 km to Sultanahmet.
Quick answer: M11 now gives Istanbul Airport a western rail exit
The Istanbul Airport (IST) M11 metro now reaches Halkalı: the Halkalı-Arnavutköy extension opened on 20 June 2026. That changes arrival planning for travellers who can use the rail network toward the western side of Istanbul, while private-transfer routes remain straightforward: Taksim is 41.92 km and 44 minutes, and Sultanahmet is 49.62 km and 55 minutes.
The practical choice is still destination-led. The metro is useful when your final stop sits well on the connected rail side of the city and you are travelling within operating hours. A private transfer is simpler when you have a hotel door, late landing, family group or luggage-heavy arrival to manage.
What changed with Halkalı
The M11 reached Istanbul Airport in stages. It opened to the airport from Kağıthane on 22 January 2023, reached Gayrettepe on 29 January 2024, and then extended to Halkalı through the Halkalı-Arnavutköy section on 20 June 2026. Older arrival advice may still describe the airport metro as a line only useful toward Kağıthane or Gayrettepe; that is now incomplete.
İGA lists the M11 stops as Gayrettepe, Kağıthane, Üniversite-Hasdal, Kemerburgaz, Göktürk, İhsaniye, Istanbul Airport, Cargo Terminal, Taşoluk, Arnavutköy, Ibn Haldun University, Kayaşehir, Olimpiyatköy, Halkalı Stadium and Halkalı. For a traveller, the value of that list is not to memorize it; it is to see whether your hotel or onward rail connection naturally fits the line.
What the metro does well
The M11 is a strong option when your destination is rail-friendly and your arrival lands within the metro’s operating window. Istanbul Airport’s own arrival scale is large: it is a single-terminal airport about 40 km from the city, with domestic and international arrivals in one building. The metro station at the airport has an arrivals area with cafés, a money-exchange office, toilets, infant care and prayer rooms.
For central European-side access, the Ministry of Transport stated that Gayrettepe-Istanbul Airport takes 30 minutes by train, Taksim-Istanbul Airport 41 minutes and 4. Levent-Istanbul Airport 35 minutes. Treat those as station-to-station train times; any walk, interchange or final hotel approach still belongs to your own arrival plan.
Where road transfer still has a place
Road transfer is not made obsolete by a longer metro line. It answers a different need: one airport exit, one vehicle, one booked address. For Taksim, the private route is 41.92 km and 44 minutes. For Sultanahmet, it is 49.62 km and 55 minutes. Those route times are useful when your first concern is reaching a hotel rather than joining a transport network.
Sultanahmet also has a special final-approach issue. The district is the historic peninsula area associated with Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace, and some hotel approaches require a short walk from the nearest accessible point. If that is your destination, the question is not only metro versus road; it is how you want to handle the final stretch after a long flight.
| Arrival choice | What it helps with | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| M11 metro | Rail-linked destinations, especially after the Halkalı extension. | Current operating hours and your final interchange. |
| Havaist or İETT | Public routes from the airport to city points. | Current routes; İGA lists 11 Havaist routes and 5 İETT routes. |
| Private transfer | Direct route to an address such as Taksim or Sultanahmet. | Exact hotel access and the confirmed meeting point. |
Night arrivals need a separate decision
Istanbul Airport operates 24/7, 365 days a year, and Türkiye AIP lists customs and immigration, health and sanitation, handling and security as H24. That supports night-arrival planning, but it does not mean every ground-transport option works the same way all night. For night arrivals, the M11 metro is not an option after midnight and runs 06:00-00:00.
If your flight lands near the edge of those hours, check the operator before you rely on the metro. Havaist and İETT route counts also change with transport updates, so treat public routes as something to verify close to travel. Flight status is monitored for airport pickups, and pickup timing may be adjusted based on the actual arrival time.
How to choose after landing at IST
- Use M11 when the rail network fits your destination. Halkalı adds a stronger western option, but the last leg still matters.
- Use Havaist or İETT when a public stop fits cleanly. Check current route information before travelling.
- Use a private transfer when the address is the priority. This is especially relevant for hotels, family arrivals and late landings.
- Plan Sultanahmet by its final approach. The first road or rail leg is only part of reaching the hotel.
