Landing in Istanbul After Midnight: How a Late-Night Arrival Works at IST and SAW

How a late-night arrival works at Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW): night operations, driver meeting points and how to plan the drive.

Landing in Istanbul After Midnight: How a Late-Night Arrival Works at IST and SAW

Istanbul Airport (IST) operates 24 hours a day, and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is busiest between 23:00 and 04:00. After midnight, plan the meeting point and the drive to your district, since the M11 metro stops.

Short answer: the airport is awake, the ground transport is thinner

A landing after midnight is routine at both Istanbul airports. Istanbul Airport (IST) operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) stays busy through the night, with arrivals concentrated between 23:00 and 04:00 because of heavy low-cost carrier traffic. What changes after midnight is not the terminal but everything around it: public transit does not run around the clock the way the airports do, so the useful questions are where the pickup point is and how long the drive to your district will feel after a late flight.

Istanbul Airport (IST) at night

Istanbul Airport opened in October 2018 in Arnavutköy, on the northern edge of the European side and roughly 40 km from the city centre. International and domestic passengers share one terminal building, and it remains operational all night. The one transport fact to build around is that the M11 metro line stops after midnight, so a landing in the small hours cannot rely on it.

After customs, turn left and walk to the far end of the hall: that is Gate 13 (Gate 14 for some operators). The terminal is large, so on a late flight it helps to check your booking for the exact gate and to message your driver once you have your bags.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) at night

Sabiha Gökçen Airport is in Pendik on the Asian side and is the main base for low-cost carriers such as Pegasus Airlines. It is a single integrated terminal for domestic and international traffic, and it is busiest at exactly the hours when many travellers land late: between 23:00 and 04:00. As general planning logic, a terminal that is busy at 01:00 may take longer to leave than the landing time alone suggests, so avoid fitting anything time-critical in the first hour after you land.

The meeting point works differently from IST. Private transfer vehicles cannot wait directly outside the terminal exit, so the pickup point is across the street.

Where you are sleeping matters more than which airport

After midnight the real variable is the drive. SAW sits on the Asian side, which makes Asian-side districts very quick: Kadıköy is about 32 km and 46 minutes from SAW, with no Bosphorus crossing. European-side districts from SAW mean crossing a Bosphorus bridge or tunnel. From IST, a Bosphorus-shore district such as Beşiktaş is about 44.51 km and 43 minutes by private transfer.

ISTBeşiktaşabout 44.51 km, 43 minEuropean shore; the airport is about 40 km from the city centre

If your flights leave the choice open, a useful rule of thumb is to match the airport to the side of the city you are sleeping on. When the schedule decides for you, simply allow for the crossing. The wider comparison is in IST versus SAW, and for the Asian side in particular, the guide to Kadıköy and the Asian side from IST or SAW covers the details.

A practical checklist for a late-night arrival

  • Share your exact flight number and your accommodation's address with the transfer provider, so the pickup follows the real landing time. Flight status is monitored for airport pickups, and pickup timing may be adjusted based on the actual arrival time.
  • Tell your accommodation you are arriving after midnight and ask how entry works at that hour. It is worth confirming this before you fly, not at the door.
  • Keep your phone usable so that you can message the driver once you are through the terminal.
  • Do not stack the morning. After a long drive that ends in the small hours, an early meeting or a tight departure the next morning leaves very little margin.

A meet and greet is available as an optional extra if you would like to be met in person at the arrivals hall.

Common questions

Is Istanbul Airport open all night?

Yes. Istanbul Airport (IST) operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Can I take the metro from IST after midnight?

No. The M11 metro line stops after midnight, so a late landing needs another way into the city.

Why is SAW busy at night?

Low-cost carriers such as Pegasus Airlines concentrate their landings there, and the busiest window runs from 23:00 to 04:00.
