Two products, one phrase
"Private Istanbul tour" is used to describe both a chauffeured, driver-only service and a fully guided tour with a licensed guide narrating each site. They're priced differently, they deliver a different experience, and confusing the two is the single most common source of disappointment in tour bookings anywhere, not just Istanbul.
What a private driver service actually gives you
A private vehicle and a professional driver, hotel pickup and drop-off, and a fixed route between stops. Our three tours — the Istanbul Classics Tour, the Old City / Sultanahmet Tour, and the Bosphorus Experience — are exactly this: private vehicle and driver, no licensed guide included on any of them. What you get is control over pace, privacy, comfort, and door-to-door convenience — you decide how long to linger at each stop, within the route.
What a licensed guide adds
A guide narrates each site's history as you walk through it, answers questions in real time, and can adapt the depth of explanation to your interest level. In Turkey, site-narration at major monuments is a regulated profession — a licensed guide has formal training and certification. This is a real, separate service, and it's not something a driver is trained or licensed to provide.
Why we're direct about this
It would be easy to blur the line and let "private tour" imply more than it delivers. We'd rather you book knowing exactly what's included: a private vehicle and driver gets you to every site on the route, efficiently and comfortably, with no crowds to navigate around a shared itinerary — but the historical narration is either self-guided (our Old City tour includes a walking notes card) or something you arrange separately with a licensed guide.
Which one should you book?
- You want efficient, comfortable access to the sites and prefer reading or researching in your own time: a private driver service is enough, and it's what all three of our tours provide.
- You want real-time historical narration and the ability to ask questions on the spot: arrange a licensed guide in addition — ask us before booking and we can point you toward how to add one.
- You're deciding between our two Old City options: see our half-day vs full-day comparison for how they differ in scope.
FAQ
Do any Istanbul Airport Rides tours include a guide?
No — all three private tours are vehicle-and-driver service. The Old City tour includes a self-guided walking notes card; the Classics and Bosphorus tours don't include narration.
Is a private driver cheaper than a guided tour?
Generally yes, since a guide's licensing and expertise is a separate, additional service on top of the vehicle and driver.
Can I add a guide to one of these tours?
The tours themselves are vehicle-and-driver only; if guided narration matters to you, ask before booking so we can advise on arranging one separately.
