Overview

About Antalya

Antalya is Turkey's leading Mediterranean coastal tourism hub, combining the historic Kaleiçi old town with modern resort belts like Lara and Belek; Antalya Airport (AYT) sits about 13-16 km from the city center and just ~15 km from Lara.

Antalya's roots trace back to the 2nd century BCE, when King Attalos II of Pergamon founded it as Attaleia. Layered with Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman history, the city grew from a quiet regional harbor town into one of the world's most visited destinations following a state-led tourism expansion strategy launched in the 1960s — historically ranking just behind Paris and London.

The city's heart is Kaleiçi, entered through Hadrian's Gate (Üçkapılar), a triple-arched marble triumphal arch built in 130 CE to mark Emperor Hadrian's visit — beyond it, narrow cobblestone streets, red-tiled Ottoman timber mansions and a historic marina. Nearby, the Düden Waterfalls offer two distinct characters: the Lower Falls plunging 40 meters off limestone cliffs into the Mediterranean, and the Upper Falls set inside a forested park. Along the coast, Konyaaltı to the west is a pebble beach with clear water, while Lara to the east has soft golden sand and a gentle shallow shelf.

What sets Antalya apart is the coexistence of a modern all-inclusive resort belt with its historic core. Areas like Lara-Kundu and Belek host massive self-contained five-star resorts with water parks and championship golf courses, while Kaleiçi remains a quiet, pedestrian sanctuary of boutique hotels in restored Ottoman mansions.
