Quick answer: start in the Ottoman core, then choose one extension

For most visitors, Bursa works well as a day focused on the Ottoman heritage of the city centre, followed by one wider excursion. Build the first day around Ulu Cami, Koza Han, Yeşil Cami, Yeşil Türbe and Muradiye. If you have more time, choose between Cumalıkızık, Uludağ or İznik rather than trying to compress every place into the same day. GoTürkiye describes Bursa as the first capital of the Ottoman Empire, and UNESCO inscribed “Bursa and Cumalıkızık: the Birth of the Ottoman Empire” on the World Heritage List in 2014, so the strongest plan is one that lets the early Ottoman story remain readable.

How to think about Bursa's layout

Bursa is easiest to understand as a set of linked themes rather than a checklist. The historic centre gives you the mosque, market and silk-trade side of the city. Yeşil and Muradiye show the külliye tradition and early Ottoman patronage. Cumalıkızık adds village texture to the same World Heritage story. Uludağ changes the mood completely, with GoTürkiye describing a gondola route to a mountain that is snowy in winter and cool in summer. İznik is a separate extension with the İznik Hagia Sophia Mosque, the İznik Museum and Lake İznik.

That structure matters because Bursa can become tiring if you treat every name as equally close and equally quick. Keep the first day walkable and central where possible, then decide whether the second day should be heritage village, mountain or lake-and-town. Check current opening information with each venue before going, especially for museums and religious sites, because arrangements can change.

A simple sequence for the first day

Begin with Ulu Cami and Koza Han

Start with Ulu Cami because it anchors the historic centre. The Bursa Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism says Ulu Cami was commissioned by Yıldırım Bayezid and completed in 1400. It is covered by 20 domes, measures 55 x 69 metres, and is described as the largest of the mosques named Ulu Cami in Türkiye. The directorate also notes that 18 of its domes collapsed in the 1855 earthquake, a reminder that the building's present form belongs to a long history of survival and repair.

Pair Ulu Cami with Koza Han rather than rushing straight across the city. GoTürkiye describes Bursa as having a long silk tradition and Koza Han as a centre of silk shops and historic architecture. This pairing gives the first morning a clear theme: imperial mosque, market life and silk. It also keeps the route concentrated, which helps if you reached Bursa after an intercity journey.

Continue to Yeşil Cami and Yeşil Türbe

Yeşil is the natural next chapter. The Bursa Provincial Directorate says Yeşil Cami was commissioned by Çelebi Mehmed in 1419; its architect was Hacı İvaz Paşa; the building was finished in December 1419 and its decoration in 1424. The central dome is 13 m in diameter and 25 m high. Nearby, Yeşil Türbe was built in 1421 by Çelebi Sultan Mehmed and is largely covered in green tiles.

Give this part of the day enough attention. Ulu Cami is broad and urban, while Yeşil has a more focused architectural and decorative story. Seeing them in sequence helps Bursa feel like a capital with layers, not just a set of individual monuments.

Leave Muradiye for a quieter late-day stop

Muradiye works well after the more central sights. The Bursa Provincial Directorate says the Muradiye Mosque was built by Sultan Murad II between 1424 and 1426 and is the last mosque built in Bursa in the name of an Ottoman sultan. Its rococo-style mihrab dates from the 18th century. The Muradiye Complex also includes the Qur'an and Manuscripts Museum, according to GoTürkiye.

Because Muradiye sits naturally as a later stop in the story, it is a good place to slow down. If your arrival day began at an airport or with the Istanbul-Bursa road, consider making Muradiye the final heritage stop rather than adding another outlying excursion.

What to add on the second day

ExtensionMain characterHow to use it
CumalıkızıkEarly-Ottoman village with cobbled streets and colourful houses, described by GoTürkiyeChoose it when you want the World Heritage story beyond the city centre
UludağMountain setting; GoTürkiye says a gondola takes visitors up, snowy in winter and cool in summerChoose it when you want a landscape break from the city
İznikTown and lake extension with İznik Hagia Sophia Mosque, İznik Museum and Lake İznikChoose it as a separate cultural side trip rather than a rushed add-on

Cumalıkızık is a thematic extension from the city-centre monuments. UNESCO includes the village among the 8 components of the Bursa and Cumalıkızık World Heritage property, and GoTürkiye describes it as an early-Ottoman village with cobbled streets and colourful houses. Treat it as a separate extension from the city centre, then allow enough time to experience the village texture rather than using it only as a photo stop. The Bursa Airport to Cumalıkızık guide goes deeper on that village if it is the focus of your trip.

Uludağ is a different kind of choice. GoTürkiye says a gondola takes visitors up to Uludağ, snowy in winter and cool in summer. The Bursa Provincial Directorate notes that Uludağ was declared a national park in 1961 and registered as a first-degree natural site in 2006. Put Uludağ on the plan when you want the day to move from city heritage to mountain air, and check current operating details before you go.

İznik should be treated as a real extension, not something to squeeze between central Bursa stops. GoTürkiye describes İznik with the İznik Hagia Sophia Mosque, the İznik Museum and Lake İznik. If those are important to you, give İznik its own block of time and keep the Bursa centre on a separate day.

Food and craft anchors

Bursa's visitor experience is not only monumental. GoTürkiye describes Iskender kebab as originating in 1867 at a shop in the Kayhan district of Bursa: lamb grilled on a horizontal skewer over charcoal, served on pide with tomato sauce and yoghurt. That gives Kayhan a food reason to appear in the itinerary without turning lunch into a detour for its own sake.

The silk tradition is the other practical anchor. Koza Han belongs early in the day because GoTürkiye describes it as a centre of silk shops and historic architecture. Visiting it near Ulu Cami keeps craft, trade and religious architecture together in one compact story.

Getting there from Istanbul airports

For travellers arriving from Istanbul, the published road estimate from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Bursa is about 192 km and roughly 139 minutes, while Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) to Bursa is about 118 km and roughly 82 minutes. The route from SAW is shorter on paper; IST may still fit better for international flights. KGM says the Osmangazi Bridge opened on 1 July 2016 and reduced the Gulf of İzmit crossing compared with older around-the-gulf or car-ferry alternatives, one reason the road corridor matters for Bursa access.

If you arrive late in the day, plan only a light first evening in Bursa. Put Ulu Cami, Koza Han and Yeşil on the next day rather than trying to start the heritage sequence while tired. Flight status is monitored for airport pickups, and pickup timing may be adjusted based on the actual arrival time.

FAQ

Is Bursa mainly a day trip or an overnight stay?

Bursa is easier to treat as more than a single stop if you want both the Ottoman centre and an extension such as Cumalıkızık, Uludağ or İznik. A compact visit can focus on Ulu Cami, Koza Han and Yeşil; a fuller plan separates the wider places into another day.

Which Bursa sights are part of the UNESCO listing?

UNESCO lists 8 components: the Khans Area, the Orhan Ghazi Tombs, the Hüdavendigar Külliye, the Hüdavendigar Külliye old Turkish bath, the Yıldırım Külliye, the Yeşil Külliye, the Muradiye Külliye and Cumalıkızık.

Should Cumalıkızık and Uludağ be on the same day?

They can be considered together only if you are comfortable with a fuller day. They serve different purposes: Cumalıkızık extends the early Ottoman heritage story, while Uludağ is the mountain and nature choice.
