Two answers to "where should I stay"
Almost every Istanbul guide recommends either Sultanahmet or Taksim, often without explaining why they're such different choices. They're about 5 km apart, but they put you in genuinely different trips.
Sultanahmet: inside the sights
Sultanahmet is the historic peninsula itself — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern are all within walking distance, and the main streets have been closed to traffic since 2025. This is where the Old City / Sultanahmet Tour and Istanbul Classics Tour both run. Hotels range from boutique historic houses to large luxury properties like Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet. What it isn't: a nightlife or shopping district — restaurants and cafés cater heavily to visitors, and the neighborhood quiets down after the sites close.
Taksim: the working city
Taksim sits above historic Beyoğlu (Pera), built around İstiklal Avenue, the Republic Monument and Gezi Park. It's Istanbul's concentration of large-scale 5-star business hotels — Congress Valley includes InterContinental Istanbul and CVK Park Bosphorus. İstiklal Avenue itself is vehicle-free and lined with restaurants, bars and shops that stay busy well into the evening — this is where Istanbul's nightlife actually concentrates. What it isn't: within walking distance of the major historic sites; getting to Sultanahmet from Taksim means a tram or a 15–20 minute transfer.

Can I walk from Taksim to Sultanahmet?
It's about 5 km and roughly an hour on foot — most visitors take the T2 Nostalgic Tram down to Karaköy and connect to the T1 tram, or book a private transfer, rather than walking the full distance.
Which district has better hotel value?
Neither is inherently cheaper — Sultanahmet's boutique hotels and Taksim's business hotels both range widely by season and property. The bigger factor is usually whether you value walking to the sights (Sultanahmet) or nightlife and transit flexibility (Taksim) more.
Is Taksim safe at night?
İstiklal Avenue and the immediate Taksim area are well-lit, busy commercial streets late into the evening, same as most major city centers — normal city-travel precautions apply.
