Best Areas to Stay in Istanbul: A District-by-District Guide

Istanbul Airport Rides·September 7, 2026·8 min read

The best area to stay in Istanbul depends on trip type: Sultanahmet for walking to the major historic sites, Beşiktaş for Bosphorus-front luxury hotels, Taksim for nightlife and transit connections, Şişli or Nişantaşı for business/upscale stays close to Istanbul Airport, and Üsküdar or Kadıköy on the Asian side for travelers flying via Sabiha Gökçen Airport.

Why the district matters more than the hotel

In a lot of cities, "where to stay" is mostly about the hotel brand. In Istanbul it's closer to choosing a mode of travel: Sultanahmet puts you inside 1,500 years of history but on largely traffic-restricted streets; Beşiktaş puts you on the Bosphorus with Europe on one side and Asia on the other; Kadıköy and Üsküdar put you on the Asian side entirely, a ferry or bridge crossing from the historic sites. None of these are wrong choices — they're different trips. Here's what each of eight commonly-recommended districts actually offers.

Sultanahmet — inside the historic peninsula

Sultanahmet is the old city itself: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern are all within walking distance, and the main streets have been closed to traffic since 2025. Hotel character ranges from boutique historic houses to large luxury properties like Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet. Private transfer time from Istanbul Airport (IST) runs roughly 45–75 minutes. Best for: a first visit built around the major historic sites, minimal need to travel between neighborhoods.

Beşiktaş — the Bosphorus shoreline

An 8.4 km Bosphorus shoreline district holding Dolmabahçe Palace and Yıldız Palace, with the city's concentration of waterfront luxury hotels — Çırağan Palace Kempinski, Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Bosphorus, Shangri-La Bosphorus among them. No direct metro (nearest is Gayrettepe), but strong ferry links and close to the Levent financial district. Best for: a Bosphorus-view stay with easy access to the Bosphorus Experience tour's own route.

Taksim — the modern center

Sitting above historic Beyoğlu (Pera), Taksim is built around İstiklal Avenue, the Republic Monument and Gezi Park, and is the city's concentration of large-scale 5-star business hotels — Congress Valley includes properties like InterContinental Istanbul and CVK Park Bosphorus. Reached by M2 Metro, F1 Funicular and the T2 Nostalgic Tram; İstiklal Avenue itself is vehicle-free. Best for: nightlife, shopping, and a stay with strong public transit connections in every direction.

Şişli — business and medical

The backbone of modern Istanbul's finance and medical-tourism scene, built up rapidly after an 1870 fire in neighboring Pera. Home to Cevahir Mall, the Mecidiyeköy skyscraper cluster and VKV American Hospital, on the M2/M7 metro interchange. Best for: business travel or medical-tourism stays needing fast airport access — roughly 35–45 minutes from IST.

Nişantaşı — fashion and quiet luxury

Istanbul's fashion and luxury-retail district, centered on Abdi İpekçi and Teşvikiye Streets, with sub-neighborhoods including Teşvikiye and Maçka — home to Park Hyatt Istanbul – Maçka Palas. Reached via the M2 Osmanbey station. Best for: upscale shopping and a residential, less touristic pace, still with a fast metro line into the center.

Karaköy — design and galleries

At the Golden Horn mouth of the Galata Bridge, within walking distance of Galata Tower — old port warehouses now hold galleries, design stores and cafés. Best for: travelers who want to walk to both the Old City (across the bridge) and Beyoğlu, in a neighborhood built around design rather than monuments.

Üsküdar — Asian-side, Bosphorus-front

On the Asian side directly across from the historic peninsula, Üsküdar has been the main crossing point to Europe since Byzantine times — Maiden's Tower sits just offshore. Served by Marmaray, the M5 Metro and frequent ferries, and home to Vakko Hotel Sumahan Bosphorus. Distance from SAW runs roughly 21–45 minutes, notably shorter than from IST. Best for: a quieter, still Bosphorus-front stay with a short hop to Sabiha Gökçen.

Kadıköy — Istanbul's oldest district, Asian side

Founded by Megarian Greeks in 685 BCE as Chalcedon — older than Byzantium itself — Kadıköy today is a market, café and nightlife district around the Bull Statue and Moda seafront, reached by the T3 Nostalgic Tram, M4 Metro and ferry. It's roughly 20 km from SAW with no Bosphorus crossing required, versus around 50 km from IST crossing the Bosphorus. Best for: travelers flying via SAW who want a local, non-touristic base.

Quick decision guide

  • First visit, want to walk to the major sites: Sultanahmet
  • Bosphorus view, willing to pay for it: Beşiktaş
  • Nightlife and shopping, strong transit: Taksim
  • Business trip or medical stay, fast IST access: Şişli
  • Quiet, upscale, still central: Nişantaşı
  • Flying via SAW, want the Asian side: Üsküdar or Kadıköy

Whichever district you choose, book your airport transfer to the hotel in advance — transfer times vary by 30–45 minutes between these districts depending on which of Istanbul's two airports you land at.

FAQ

Which district is closest to Istanbul Airport (IST)?

Şişli and Nişantaşı run around 35–45 minutes by private transfer from IST — shorter than Sultanahmet (45–75 minutes) or Beşiktaş (60–90 minutes).

Which district is best for Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) arrivals?

Üsküdar and Kadıköy, both on the Asian side, are noticeably closer to SAW than to IST — Üsküdar runs as little as 21 minutes from SAW.

Can I stay in two districts on one trip?

Yes — a common pattern is a European-side district (Sultanahmet or Beşiktaş) for the historic sites, then Kadıköy or Üsküdar for a night or two on the Asian side.
