Tekirdağ is a Marmara coast city in Thrace, known for its old-town museums, Ottoman houses and the Thrace Vineyard Route. From central Istanbul it is about 159 km and roughly 123 minutes by road (routing estimate).
Tekirdağ is a Marmara coast city in Thrace. GoTürkiye notes that it lies on the Edirne–İstanbul route and became a summer resort in the Ottoman period. Its old town can be explored on foot, and the surrounding area includes vineyards and Şarköy's long beach.
In town, GoTürkiye points to the Rakoczi Museum, a three-storey Ottoman house where the Hungarian national hero Ferenc Rakoczi II lived and which the Hungarian government restored as a museum, and to the Namık Kemal House, honouring the poet born in Tekirdağ in 1840. The Archaeology and Ethnography Museum is housed in a building put up in 1927 as the governor's residence; according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's provincial directorate, the museum was founded in 1967, opened in a new building in 1992 and shows finds from Heraion Teichos, Perinthos and Apri. The Rüstempaşa Complex, built in 1554 and attributed to Mimar Sinan, has a mosque, bedesten, madrasa, hamam and library.
Beyond the centre, the Thrace Vineyard Route runs through Mürefte, 13 km from Şarköy and home to wine museums inside wineries, and through Şarköy, which has a beach of about 60 km. GoTürkiye gives April as the usual bud break and October as the typical harvest, and advises booking tours, vineyard restaurants and accommodation in advance. Uçmakdere, 35 km from Tekirdağ, is known for its paragliding school. Other stops include the Marmara Ereğlisi Lighthouse, in operation since 1861, and the Çorlu Süleymaniye Mosque, commissioned in 1521.
