About Levent
Levent was Istanbul's first planned suburban development, designed between 1947 and 1960 by architects Kemal Ahmet Aru and Rebii Gorar for the Emlak Kredi Bankası, inspired by the British "garden city" movement — a quiet neighborhood of villa-style detached and row houses. From the late 1980s, the liberalization of Turkey's financial sector opened the wide plots along Büyükdere Avenue to corporate skyscraper construction, and Levent rapidly became Istanbul's central business district.
Today Levent is the heart of Turkey's banking sector: the headquarters of institutions like Yapı Kredi, Garanti BBVA and Akbank line the Büyükdere Avenue corridor. The skyline is dominated by İşbank Tower 1 (181m, once Turkey's tallest building), the twin towers of Sabancı Center, and the 261-meter Istanbul Sapphire — Turkey's first ecological skyscraper, with a double-skin facade and private gardens every 3 floors. Malls like Kanyon, Metrocity and ÖzdilekPark connect directly to the office towers.
Behind Levent's skyscrapers, quiet pockets of the original low-rise development remain. Nearby Ulus Park hosts established restaurants with Bosphorus views, including Sunset Grill & Bar (since 1994) and Ulus 29 (since 1983, Michelin-recommended). For transport, the M2 line's Levent and 4. Levent stations sit at the district's center, while the Gayrettepe interchange connects directly to the M11 airport line — just ~30 minutes to Istanbul Airport.
