Side or Kemer: Two Directions from Antalya Airport

Kemer is 58.2 km and about 57 minutes from Antalya Airport, Side 64.7 km and about 61 minutes. The drives are similar, so choose by setting: Kemer for pebble coves under pine-covered mountains, Side for flat sandy beaches beside an ancient town.

Quick answer: similar drives, opposite directions

From Antalya Airport (AYT), Kemer is 58.2 km and about 57 minutes by private transfer, and Side is 64.7 km, about 65 km, and about 61 minutes. Those figures are close enough that transfer time should not decide between them. What does matter is that the two lie in opposite directions, Kemer southwest of Antalya and Side east of the airport, and that they offer almost opposite coastlines: pebble coves under pine-covered mountains on one side, flat golden sand beside an ancient town on the other. For a first Turkish Riviera holiday the real decision is landscape and style of stay, not minutes in the vehicle.

Why the similar drive times are a trap

It is tempting to read 57 and 61 minutes as "about the same trip". They are about the same length, but they are not the same journey. You leave the airport in different directions, you arrive in different terrain, and you end up on different sides of Antalya. As guidance, treat the two as separate bases rather than neighbouring options: choosing one does not put the other within easy reach, so decide which coastline you want before you book, not after you arrive.

The Kemer direction: mountains meeting the sea

Kemer is a coastal resort district where the pine-forested Taurus (Beydağları) mountains drop straight into clear, pebbled coves. The town has a marina and a compact centre, and its resorts spread south along the shore through Göynük, Beldibi, Kiriş, Çamyuva and Tekirova, several of them set on their own coves beneath the mountains. Accommodation is a mix of mid-to-upper all-inclusive beachfront resorts and smaller pine-grove boutique hotels. The ancient Lycian harbour city of Phaselis lies within the district, and Olympos and the Chimaera flames are a short trip further.

The 57-minute figure is for Kemer itself. Resorts further down the shore, in the Tekirova direction, sit deeper into the district, so ask your hotel for its own transfer time. Our Kemer and Tekirova first-evening guide covers how that arrival plays out.

The Side direction: sand, ruins and a living town

Side is an ancient coastal peninsula town in the Manavgat district. Its pedestrianised old town sits among Greco-Roman ruins, including a 2nd-century Roman theatre, the Nymphaeum and the seaside Temple of Apollo on the headland. Around it, golden-sand beach zones at Kumköy, Çolaklı and Titreyengöl are lined with large all-inclusive family resorts and spa hotels. The beaches are flat and sandy, and they are backed by a genuinely inhabited ancient town. The same point applies here: the 61-minute figure is for Side, so check your hotel's beach zone. The Side and Temple of Apollo guide goes into the town.

How to decide: three questions

  • Do you want to swim from pebbles or from sand? Kemer's coves are pebbled and sit beneath the mountains. Side's beaches are flat golden sand. For many families this one preference settles the choice.
  • Do you want a compact marina town or an ancient town? Kemer has a marina and a compact centre, with Phaselis in the district. Side's old town is pedestrianised and sits among Roman ruins you can walk into straight from the beach.
  • Large resort or smaller hotel? Side is lined with large all-inclusive family resorts and spa hotels. Kemer adds smaller pine-grove boutique hotels to its mid-to-upper all-inclusive beachfront resorts.

What each base puts within reach

The two areas hand you different kinds of sightseeing, and that is worth weighing alongside the beach. In Kemer, the ancient Lycian harbour city of Phaselis is inside the district, so a day among ruins is a local outing, and Olympos and the Chimaera flames are a short trip further. The setting is as much about nature as about the resort, since the mountains drop straight into the coves. In Side the history is the town itself: the old town is pedestrianised, the Roman theatre, Nymphaeum and Temple of Apollo are on the peninsula, and visitors can walk from a beachfront hotel straight into the archaeological site. If you want ruins to be a daily backdrop rather than a day out, that points to Side. If you prefer to dip into history for a day and spend the rest in a cove, it points to Kemer.

Arrival-day planning for either direction

Both drives are close to an hour, so plan your first evening around that: eat or settle in on arrival, and leave sightseeing for the next day. If your flight lands late, the late-night landing guide covers Side and Kemer along with Belek. For a wider look at Belek, Side, Kemer and Alanya together, the resort-area transfer planner is the place to start.

Flight status is monitored for airport pickups, and pickup timing may be adjusted based on the actual arrival time. Share your flight number with your hotel too, so it knows when to expect you.
