Kaleiçi ("inside the castle") is a compact 35-hectare historic core founded in the 2nd century BC as "Attaleia" by King Attalos II of Pergamon. Its ancient walls enclose a layered heritage of Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman civilizations — a living open-air museum.
Visitors typically enter through Hadrian's Gate (Üçkapılar), a triple-arched marble gateway built in 130 AD to honor the Roman Emperor; deep grooves worn by ancient chariot wheels are still visible in the stone pavement. The road down from the cliffs leads to the historic Old Harbor, once a Roman trade hub, now a picturesque yacht marina lined with waterfront cafés. Narrow cobblestone streets showcase 19th-century Ottoman mansions with projecting bay windows and pebble-stone courtyards.
Kaleiçi's accommodation scene is almost entirely restored historic konaks and boutique cave hotels — properties like Tekeli Konak and Tuvana Hotel offer an intimate stay with original timber details and quiet courtyards.
To protect its historic integrity, direct vehicle access inside the old town is heavily restricted, and many narrow, winding alleys are pedestrian-only. Your driver drops you at one of the main gates around the old walls.
