About Kadıköy
Kadıköy is Istanbul's oldest district, on the city's Asian side — known in Byzantine times as Chalcedon, it was founded by Megarian Greeks in 685 BCE, years before Byzantium (today's Sultanahmet) itself was established. After the Ottoman conquest, the area was granted to Hızır Bey, the first Ottoman judge of Istanbul, giving it the name "Kadı Köyü" (Judge's Village).
The bronze Bull Statue at the Altıyol intersection is the district's best-known meeting point — cast in Paris in 1864, gifted by Germany to the Ottomans, and relocated to the Asian side in 1970. Since 2012, the "Mural Istanbul" project has filled the Yeldeğirmeni and Moda neighborhoods with large-scale street art.
The walk from Kadıköy pier to Moda leads through Moda Coastal Park to the historic Moda Tea Garden; the T3 nostalgic tram (1950s-era German Tatra cars) connects the district internally. Century-old shops like Şekerci Cafer Erol (est. 1807), Baylan Pastanesi (est. 1923) and Fazıl Bey's coffee house sit alongside a modern third-wave coffee scene.
For private transfers, Kadıköy's biggest advantage is proximity to Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) — only ~20 km away, with no Bosphorus crossing required — making it one of the fastest districts to reach for passengers landing on the Asian side. From Istanbul Airport (IST), the journey takes longer since it requires crossing the Bosphorus.
