About Ortaköy
Ortaköy is a waterfront village on the European shore of the Bosphorus, within the Beşiktaş district, that has hosted a multicultural mosaic for centuries. Known as Agios Phokas in Byzantine times, it became Mesachori ("Middle Village") under Ottoman rule; Turks settled here from the 16th century, Sephardic Jews from the 17th. For generations Muslim, Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Jewish communities lived side by side — a "holy triangle" still visible today in the close proximity of the mosque, the Greek church, the Armenian church and the synagogue.
The symbol of Ortaköy Square is the Büyük Mecidiye Mosque (Ortaköy Mosque), built in 1853-1856 for Sultan Abdülmecid by the Balyan architects Garabet and Nigoğayos — a neo-Baroque building where light reflected off the Bosphorus floods the interior. Directly behind it rises the July 15 Martyrs Bridge, completed in 1973 as the first suspension bridge to span the Bosphorus; the juxtaposition of the two structures is a striking symbol of Istanbul's position between heritage and modernity. Nearby, the Feriye Palace (now Galatasaray University) and the Esma Sultan Mansion (now an event venue) round out the district's imperial legacy.
Ortaköy is known as Istanbul's street-food capital for its kumpir (stuffed baked potato) and waffles, and its square fills with craft stalls on weekends. The district has no direct metro or tram connection, though — the nearest rail station is M7 Yıldız, 1.4 km up a steep hill, or T1 Kabataş, 3.5 km south.
