Quick answer: three shores, three kinds of transfer
By private transfer from Istanbul Airport (IST), Beşiktaş is about 44.51 km and 43 minutes away, Ortaköy about 38 km and 48 minutes, and Üsküdar, on the Asian shore, about 48 km and 55 minutes. The order is not simply by distance: Ortaköy is the shorter drive on paper but takes longer than Beşiktaş, because its final stretch runs along the Beşiktaş–Ortaköy coastal corridor, where congestion is a regular feature, especially in the evening. Üsküdar is the longest of the three and the one that crosses a Bosphorus bridge.
| Shore stay | From IST by private transfer | Side of the Bosphorus | Getting around afterwards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beşiktaş | about 44.51 km, 43 min | European | No direct metro station (nearest is Gayrettepe); strong ferry links |
| Ortaköy | about 38 km, 48 min | European, within Beşiktaş | No metro or tram; M7 Yıldız is 1.4 km uphill; ferries to Eminönü and Kadıköy |
| Üsküdar | about 48 km, 55 min | Asian | Marmaray, M5 metro and frequent ferries |
The pattern behind the table is useful: the two European-shore options are close to each other in time but very different in character, while Üsküdar trades a longer drive for the better-connected pier and rail hub of the three. The sections below take each shore in turn, then turn them into decision rules.
Beşiktaş: the long waterfront with several kinds of stay
Beşiktaş runs along an 8.4 km stretch of Bosphorus shoreline, so "staying in Beşiktaş" can mean very different things. The waterfront holds Dolmabahçe Palace, built in 1856, and the Naval Museum, and it is where the Bosphorus-view hotels sit: Çırağan Palace Kempinski (built 1871), Four Seasons at the Bosphorus inside the 19th-century Atik Pasha Palace, and Shangri-La Bosphorus in a converted 1929 tobacco warehouse. Climbing north, the same district becomes Istanbul's financial centre around Levent and Büyükdere Avenue, which is why it works for both a palace-side holiday and a meeting-heavy week.
The transfer is the most straightforward of the three: about 43 minutes over 44.51 km on this route. Because the district has no direct metro station, the road or the ferry is how most visitors arrive. If you are heading for one of the shoreline hotels, it is worth asking the hotel which entrance its drivers should use, as waterfront frontages and service roads can differ. More about the district itself is on the Beşiktaş destination page.
Ortaköy: the shortest drive on paper, the slowest last mile
Ortaköy is a waterfront village inside the Beşiktaş district, built around the Büyük Mecidiye Mosque with the July 15 Martyrs Bridge rising directly behind it. The route from IST follows the O-2 Northern Marmara Motorway onto the TEM, leaves at Mecidiyeköy–Zincirlikuyu, runs down Barbaros Boulevard through Beşiktaş Square and finishes along Çırağan Caddesi. That final coastal stretch is why 38 km takes about 48 minutes: it is the shoreline road that links Beşiktaş and Ortaköy, and it fills up in the evening. A late-night arrival tends to meet a much easier road than an evening one.
Once you are in the village, the constraints are about streets, not distance. There is no metro or tram, the nearest M7 station (Yıldız) is 1.4 km uphill, and the interior streets are narrow and steep, which limits where a vehicle can stop. The square also fills with craft stalls at weekends, so as a matter of planning guidance, a weekend arrival is worth treating as a slower last stretch. Ferries are the easy exit: about 25 minutes to Eminönü and about 35 minutes to Kadıköy on Şehir Hatları. For a first walk around the village, the half-day Ortaköy guide covers the mosque, the bridge and the street food, and the Ortaköy destination page has the district summary.
Üsküdar: a longer drive to the better-connected pier
Üsküdar faces Beşiktaş across the water and has been the main gateway to the European side since Byzantine times. By road from IST it is about 48 km and 55 minutes, crossing a Bosphorus bridge, which is why the figure is the highest of the three. What you get in return is transit that the European-shore options lack. Üsküdar Ferry Terminal, in service since 1853, sends ferries to Beşiktaş, Kabataş, Eminönü and Karaköy every 10 minutes; Marmaray reaches Sirkeci in under 5 minutes, and the M5 metro line also stops here. For a guest who plans to spend days on the European side without driving, that is a real advantage.
Accommodation ranges from the adults-only Vakko Hotel Sumahan Bosphorus, converted from a historic raki distillery, to business hotels such as Address Istanbul and Mercure Altunizade. Kuzguncuk, known for its wooden houses, also falls within the district. If you fly into Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) instead, Üsküdar is the one of the three that gets noticeably closer, at roughly 33 to 36 km and 21 to 45 minutes. See the Üsküdar destination page for the district.
Decision rules: which shore for which trip
- Palaces, waterfront hotels, a financial-district meeting in the same week: Beşiktaş. It has the shortest drive of the three from IST, and Levent and Büyükdere Avenue are within the same district.
- A village evening, street food and the mosque-and-bridge view: Ortaköy, accepting that the last stretch is the slow part and that vehicle access to the inner streets is limited.
- Ferry- and rail-based sightseeing, or an Asian-side stay: Üsküdar, accepting the longer drive from IST. If your flight lands at SAW, Üsküdar is also the natural choice among these three.
- Arriving after a long flight with heavy bags: the shore with the simplest drop-off matters more than the shortest minutes. Ask your accommodation for the exact approach and entrance before you land.
Arrival-day planning across the three shores
Treat the minutes in the table as normal-traffic figures and add margin when the corridor is likely to be busy, especially for Ortaköy in the evening. Flight status is monitored for airport pickups, and pickup timing may be adjusted based on the actual arrival time. A meet and greet is available as an optional extra if you prefer to be met in person at the arrivals hall. Because the three shores sit so close to one another, you can also change your mind once you are in Istanbul: Ortaköy to Kadıköy is a ferry ride of about 35 minutes, and Üsküdar to Beşiktaş is a ferry every 10 minutes. For how the Bosphorus shores compare more broadly, see our guide to Bosphorus hotel arrivals and transfer time to each shore, and for the airport question, IST versus SAW.
