About Taksim
Taksim is the heart of modern Istanbul life, sitting atop Beyoğlu (historically Pera) and blending 19th-century European architecture with today's business world. The square's name comes from a stone water-distribution chamber (maksem) that Sultan Mahmud I built here in 1732 to distribute spring water to Pera, Galata and Kasımpaşa — the historic structure still stands at the edge of the square.
At the center of Taksim Square rises the Republic Monument, completed by Pietro Canonica in 1928. İstiklal Avenue begins here and runs 1.4 km to Tünel Square — a fully pedestrianized boulevard walked by millions daily, home to historic passages like Çiçek Pasajı, the Pera Museum, and Saint Antoine Church.
The district draws both nightlife and business travelers. Nevizade Street and its surrounding taverns offer a lively evening scene, while the "Congress Valley" north of the square — around the Istanbul Congress Center and Lütfi Kırdar — concentrates large-scale 5-star business hotels: The Marmara Taksim, CVK Park Bosphorus, Sofitel Istanbul Taksim, Divan Istanbul and the InterContinental.
For transit, Taksim is one of Istanbul's strongest hubs: the M2 metro line, the F1 funicular down to Kabataş, and the nostalgic T2 tram running the length of İstiklal Avenue all converge here. But İstiklal Avenue itself is fully pedestrianized — private vehicles and taxis can't enter it, so some boutique hotels may require a final 3-5 minute walk.
